Wood & Glass Staircase, London

In 2018, a private client commissioned LSJ Engineering to construct a wood-and-glass staircase.

We had previously worked with this client on a commercial basis. This time, he asked us to design and install a staircase at his home in West London.

The property was quite old and the stairwell ran up three floors. The challenge here was getting the dimensions of the staircase to fit in the existing opening. We also had to conform to current building regulations, which – with some stretching and squeezing – we managed to do!

We settled on a simple but striking design. It allowed plenty of light into the building, with a continuous central laminated glass panel up the centre and solid oak timber treads with open risers to match the flooring throughout the landings.

The steel stringers were powder-coated a very dark grey. This formed a nice contrast to the light walls.
